I got crafty!

I was inspired by a blog that I can’t seem to locate now… where they crafted this same gift for their child’s teacher.  I remember the child was in kindergarten… but I can’t for the life of me find the blog now to give them proper credit!

Anyway, with the end of the school year just a couple days away, I figured I better get on it.  I made Lili’s teacher (and the TA) a survival kit. It was simple and quick- I used the bead boxes from Michael’s ($2.99) and filled them with assorted supplies and necessities:

The cute shaped paperclips, page clampy things and magnets also came from Michael’s- they were in the dollar bins.  I bought the chocolate  (milk chocolate Dove Promises, yum), mints, erasers, Tylenol (doesn’t every elementary school teacher need a supply of Tylenol?) and hand sanitizer at Walmart.  Oh and the post-its, which really didn’t fit until I broke the bricks in half LOL

I also bought a 12 pack of cute pencils, but they didn’t fit in the boxes.

On the lid, I attached a thick piece of scrapbook paper trimmed to size.  I used these sheets of double sided sticky stuff- and man, that stuff was STICKY.  Lili and I choose papers with the lines, since it was more school-ish.  We bought coordinating alphabet stickers and spelled out her teacher’s names.  You should have heard her- “Capital M little R-S-dot-space big A little L-T-M-A-N”

I tied them shut with a piece of yarn, and used that to secure the pencils to the outside since they wouldn’t fit in any of the compartments.  We added a gift tag (the back has the To: and From: stuff) and we’re good to go!  (I meant to put the bird on the other box but wrote the wrong name on the tag :X) Aren’t the cute?

So, what do you think?  What did you give or are you planning on giving for teacher gifts?

I did ALL the teacher appreciation stuff. I bought the teachers a magnetic pencil holder because we got them all projectors on carts with metal sides and then I put inside a pointer and some other supplies. Teachers really like those key chains that are on the swirly bands with whistles, we got those, we got some pencils for 10 cents a 24 count box so they all go those, and some erasable highlighters and candy. For the TA’s we got little baskets, the rubber thumbs, some of that stuff that you put on your finger to count stuff, some pencils and a wet erase board for them to use to tutor and some flash cards. I spent around 600.00 on 60 staff members. We also decorated their gift bags with stamps from Michaels, which I can re-use year after year. This year we did the whole week. On monday we catered breakfast, Tuesday was gift bag day. Wednesday we got a large drink from Sonic for everyone, during happy hour, cost me 53 bucks, Thursday we did a walk of fame and gave each one a rose and Friday we catered lunch. So there you have it. haha I’m bored, so I”m rambling.

I have to say, as a teacher this is a great gift. The best part is the container!!! I can’t believe after all these years of me teaching, and me being crafty I’ve never thought to use those containers for storage! We always have to pack up our rooms and put everything in closets so I love that this is a self contained unit that can just be put away (after the chocolate has been removed of course!).

Max’s teacher always drinks water out of the iced Starbucks cup from her a.m. coffee, and over the winter break she saw an insulated re-usable cup that Starbucks immediately sold out of. Right before TA week in AZ I saw the cup so I got one for her and one for me (my own Teacher Appreciation gift). She loved it. When I was in Hawaii last week they had the trenta cups and it had an “Aloha from Hawaii” stamp on it, so I got her that too. For me, it’s the thought that counts, I’d much rather have a gift that clearly took some thinking like your gift than anything else. Not that I don’t love g/cards,but it’s nice to know that parents really do appreciate all the work teachers do.

In a previous life I was a teacher and I’d be smiling ear to ear if I received one of those. So practical yet cute. Nice work :)

LOVE the gift – love it – my favourite part? the pencils on the front – too DARLING!

I am sooo not crafty but even I could do this. Only thing is … babies too young. Also, I don’t know if we do things like this in South Africa?

Then again, we’re Americanising a lot these days (yes, I made up that word) so maybe by the time mine go to school???

So cute! As a former elementary school teacher this gets two enthusiastic thumbs up! Too bad there wasn’t a compartment big enough for margarita mix. :(
