Blogging Tips for my Reading Pleasure.

I’ve previously written about the visual aesthetics of blogs and what I feel about them.   Today, I’m going to talk about content.  I am not nearly as picky when it comes to what you blog about, so this list isn’t going to be as long.  And as I said before, these are my opinions, and they probably differ from just about everyone else!

  • Don’t worry about a niche. Everyone everywhere talks about how you need a niche.  I disagree.  It works for some people, like deal bloggers, but some of us just can’t fit into one category.
  • Humor is always good. No  one has ever said “Oh my gawd, I hate that blog.  The author is just too funny for me.”
  • Pictures are a great way to illustrate what you’re saying. This is especially true if you’re talking about family or products.  I love to see photos of who you’re blogging about, or the items you’re reviewing.  Additionally, they can break up long posts, making them easier on the eyes.
  • Don’t be afraid to get personal. I know there are always things that are off limits for everyone, but let people get to know you and get a glimpse into your life.  If I feel like I know you and I’m invested in your story, I’ll be back to read again.
  • Drama. This can be good and bad.  It’s like a train wreck and I can’t stop reading.  I like good drama- I like respectful thoughts and discussions about it though, not name calling and insults.

Bottom line- write from the heart.  If you write what you feel and what is important to you, you will find readers.

I agree completely! Especially on the niche thing. I’m me – not trying to fit into some category. And likewise I like reading all kinds of blogs – from mommy blogs, to humor, to single girl just having fun blogs.

I used to worry about the niche thing but if you write what you love then people who love you will follow. It just works. Great tips!

When I first read this, I read, “I love to see photos of who you’re blogging about, or the items you’re wearing.”

You should totally start blogging your outfits. I would, but 95% of the time I don’t get dressed and my wardrobe when I don’t go out of the house consists of undies and a tank top. I don’t believe in pants.

You’re like Brad. His pants are off, LITERALLY, within one minute of arriving home every day/afternoon/night. My home wardrobe consists of sweatpants and t-shirts/sweatshirts, depending on the temperature.

ROFL Aaron laughs at me because the rare times I leave the house, I strip as soon as I come in the door. What’s even funnier is the girls do the same, as soon as they get off the bus they take their pants off too ROFL

Nice list. I wouldn’t say we are a niche blog but we do talk a lot about family and personal stuff and do reviews and giveaways and we tend to stay on that track. Not that we don’t or won’t go outside of the box but I feel our readers like the personal aspect of our blog.

I have enjoyed your blog because you haven’t crammed yourself in a niche. Since I have never been pregnant and won’t be (51) I enjoy glimpses into your family life, the blog keeps me smiling, makes me thing and I love the photos! Glad you follow your own tips.

Yes! I totally agree with everything you just had to say! Especially the niche thing! I don’t have a niche. I guess you could say I’m a baby blog but I blog about other things too! I hate feeling like I have to put myself in a a specific category!
