It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights

Tonight we decided spur of the moment to take the kids to the movies tonight, and we decided to see the new Muppet Movie.  I grew up with the Muppets, I remember watching it every Sunday night and loving it.

The movie was great- it was everything I remembered about The Muppet Show.  Kermit singing the Rainbow Connection, Miss Piggy saying Hi-Ya and moi all the time, Fozzie’s dumb jokes.  Singing, dancing, guest stars and innocent humor that the kids could get instead of going over their heads with innuendos.

As much as I enjoy current kid’s movies,  so many of them really toe the line with what is appropriate for children.  This movie had none of that- it was just perfect.  Add Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, and Jack Black and really, who can ask for anything more?

It was what has been missing in theaters and on TV for years now.  And that’s a shame.

Now that I am a parent, I wonder where the family friendly shows have all gone.  Growing up, there were tons of shows that both children and parents found entertaining.  I enjoy current shows- like Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory- but the kids don’t get the humor, and they are just too… mature for the girls.  And the kid shows that the girls like, such as Shake It Up  on Disney- make me want to shoot myself.

It’s sad to me that there are rarely any shows that we all can enjoy.  I miss TV like The Wonder Years, Full House, The Cosby Show, and Growing Pains.  I wish they still made shows for everyone.

I think about this every time I watch TV. We don’t watch TV in front of the girls, so we’re a DVR family for the limited shows we do watch right now. Big Bang Theory is our favorite. I love that show, but it amazes me that it comes on a 7pm…not late…but the content is so mature! I can’t imagine being able to watch a show like that with the girls for a long, long time. In contrast, I remember watching some great shows with my family growing up…loved The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, Family Ties, The Wonder Years, and many more…even ALF! :) It’s a crazy sign of the times, I guess.

I’m always amazed that Two & A Half men can air in reruns on the CW/KTLA/Channel 5 (here) at 7PM! Hello! Major network, totally inappropriate content during prime kid/family TV hours!

I think reality TV helped kill any concept of a well written show of any genre. Why pay writers and directors and actors and editors, when we can just throw a bunch of dummies together and let them make fools of themselves for cheap?

We don’t have cable or DVR, so we rely mostly on Netflix, Qubo channel and the two PBS kids channels we get via antenna. Qubo even airs HeMan at night, which if you can get past the HORRIBLE colors and CHEESY animation, is still the greatest show ever.
