Preparing for a new baby

Swaddled and in his Sleeper

With previous kids, I went all out.  I decorated nurseries, bought gear, filled closets- and I started the process as soon as the pee stick turned positive.  After having our losses, I tend to wait until I hit viability to shop, but I’ve still prepared a fair amount for each baby’s arrival.  With Logan though, I only grabbed a few necessities before he was born, and then shopped for the rest while he was in the NICU, and even since he’s been home.

Through trial and error, I’ve learned what baby items will get used, and what are a waste of money.  I’ve figured out what needs to be purchased right away, and what can wait a few months.  Here are my lists of what I find I need from birth, what you don’t need, and what can wait.

Necessities:

  • Car Seat
  • Clothes (a couple onesies, sleepers, etc that are seasonally appropriate)
  • Swaddling blankets (with and without the velcro)
  • Burprags
  • Bottles & Formula (If you’re not nursing)
  • Diapers & wipes

Nice to have:

  • Swing
  • Stroller
  • Sling, wrap, or other sort of baby wearing device
  • Cute outfits
  • A dresser to put all the baby crap in
  • Bath sling

Never or Rarely Gets Used:

  • Bouncy seat
  • Diaper Genie
  • Changing table
  • Wipes warmer
  • Bottle sterilizer
  • One million stuffed animals
  • Crib skirt

Can Wait Until Baby is Older:

  • High chair
  • Crib (We co-sleep, and have a sleeper this time)
  • Exersaucer/Jumparoo
  • Shoes
  • Baby spoons
  • Toys

Is there anything I forgot that you find is necessary?

I love these posts because everyone has their must-have items. Like a lot of people LOVE that Diaper Genie and I was like, “WHATTTTT? that’s what a bin is for!” I am a bit obsessive about getting rubbish OUT so I could never stand to leave nappies inside.

we loved our changing table but we bought a chest of drawers and a pad and that was that!

Bouncer was a necessityhere too. I just don’t have enough arms to hold the baby and make dinner at the same time. I WON’T cook wearing baby and I couldn’t trust my 6 year old to hold my newborn, so…bouncer it was!
