Fly, fly precious one your endless journey has begun

I see talk everywhere online about Michelle Duggar’s recent miscarriage.   I was reading on a message board where people were saying she announced it way too early.  (I am referring to the pregnancy itself, not the loss).  She was about 15-16 weeks when she went on the Today show and made the news public.

Some are saying she should have waited until viability because of what happened with Josie. Others are saying that she waited the standard amount of time to tell, if not a bit more- as people often wait until they’re are out of the first trimester (12-13 weeks) since the risk of miscarriage decreases significantly then.

What are your views on announcing pregnancy?  Do you tell friends and family as soon as you see a positive test?  Do you wait until you see a heartbeat?  The first trimester is over?  Viability (24 weeks or so)?  Or do you just show up with a baby in your arms?

As for the loss itself, the Duggar family is planning a funeral/memorial for this baby.  She was approximately 19 weeks when they learned that there was no heartbeat.  Medically, it’s a miscarriage, not a stillbirth, but she will most likely have to labor and deliver this child.

What are your feelings on having a service for a baby of this gestation?

The “Talk”

Ladies, when did you first learn about periods?

My mom has always been very open with me about things like this, so I knew the details rather early.  When I did start, it wasn’t too big of a deal- it was just a fact of life.  We also watched a movie at school one day when I was in the 4th grade about it.  Just the girls- the boys got to go to the gym and play.  For some of the girls, it was their first introduction to puberty and menstruation.  The movie was old, and I think it had the girl from Annie in it.  They referred to pads as ‘napkins’ and showed us how to use the kind with the belt.

Why am I reminiscing about this now?  Well Lili is in 4th grade.  Do they still show these movies?

I guess it’s time to prepare her.  (I need to prepare myself!)  I wonder if they discuss cloth pads and menstrual cups yet?  Or are they so far behind that the “napkins” are just getting adhesive, and forget about wings…

Have you seen this delightful DISNEY movie from the 40′s on menstruation?

The Boring Wall

Dear Internet:

I have a very boring wall above my kitchen sink.  Since we live in military housing, painting isn’t a good idea.  I feel like there should be a window there, but that’s not an option for a few reasons.  One being the whole military housing thing, and two being the fact it would look into our garage.

I’d like to do some sort of decorating to this wall.  I’ve got my mind stuck on those vinyl wall decals because they’re removable.  Specifically the one I found on Pinterest the other day.  I’m not feeling the quote love for this specific spot, none of the sayings I’ve found scream ‘PUT ME ON YOUR KITCHEN WALL’.

I’d love to hear from you all.  I’ve been hemming and hawing over this since we first moved in.  If this were your house, what would you do to this wall?

P.S.  Please ignore the dirty dishes in the sink.

P.P. S. Also?  There’s a dinosaur in front of my dish detergent.

Fundraising Idea

Back in the day, I had a little web-based store where I sold hand dyed clothes in addition to other items.  I closed up shop when I was pregnant with the twins, although I definitely miss it sometimes!

I was trying to think of a way to earn some money towards our March of Dimes walk this year, and thought perhaps I could sell dyed tees/onesies in TaterTwin green & blue and putting the proceeds towards our fundraising goal.

I could also do other colors as well as different types of dying if people would rather have something else, like perhaps pink and blue to represent the Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness colors for girls.  Also, the stamped names if of course, optional.

Regardless, I do plan on making the six of us matching tees for the actual walk.

Hmm I could also do something like this, sticking with the green and blue idea.

What do you think? Would anyone be interested?  How much would you be willing to spend?

Ask Me Anything! Part II

Originally posted on 12/28/09, but I feel the urge to answer more questions.

I feel like writing, well no not writing. When I write, I can’t even read it, my handwriting is so bad. And if I wrote, then you guys couldn’t read it, unless of course I scanned it, and my scanner is a piece of crap. So let me begin again.

I feel like blogging, but I could use a good topic or two. I thought perhaps you all would help me out there. I know when I read other blogs, I sometimes get lost. Usually if I’ve got a question about a post (like who the hell is Gustaf and when did he die?) I try to go back through the archives and tags to see if I can put the pieces together, but sometimes I have no luck with that. Plus as a mom, I don’t always have time.

I’ve often wanted to ask people things, but don’t want to look stupid or bother them. So here’s your chance- ask me anything. I’ll answer you either in the comments (if it’s a short little answer) or make a whole new post dedicated to your question. Don’t worry about offending me, it takes a lot to do that- and nothing is off-limits. If you’re uncomfortable asking in comments for the general public to see, feel free to shoot me an email (TaterTwins@gmail.com)

I look forward to hearing from you!

*I know this picture has nothing to do with the post, but it’s of Lili in the beginning of 2005 and I just found it and it cracks me up!
