#BuildingSmiles with Colgate

The twins keep ‘borrowing’ the girls toothbrushes instead of using their toddler ones, and it’s about time to replace all of the kids toothbrushes, so we decided to head to Walmart and get some new ones tonight.  The girls are always excited about the dentist and brushing their teeth, and I hope that they pass that on to their brothers.

Colgate’s Building Smiles tour isn’t scheduled to come to our town, but if it was we’d totally go check it out.  An RV comes to your Walmart and dental health volunteers provide free screenings and education.  They hope to fight the rising cavity rates in kids and to build more healthy smiles!  You can see if they’re coming to you and learn more at www.buildingsmilestogether.com

So tonight we  purchased new toothbrushes for all four kids, as well as more toothpaste.  I have never understood why all children’s toothpaste is fruity or bubblegum flavored, instead of mint.  I know Olivia hates it and prefers to use adult toothpaste.  They should make both type of flavors.

While I’m not a huge fan of the dentist, I’ve been trying to make a point to go every 6 months for cleanings as recommended.  The girls always go to their appointments, and love it.   Pretty soon we’ll have to bring the twins in for their first dental check up.  We asked at what age to bring them last time we were there with the girls, and they said unless there’s a problem, they can go at 3.

At what age did you start bringing your child to the dentist?

The Dentist.

I was supposed to have my appointment last Wednesday, but Ryan was in the hospital. It was rescheduled for today. I totally didn’t even think that it was a bad idea to do it today until I got home and the sedatives wore off. See, Bloggy Boot Camp is Saturday. And I have a prescription for narcotics that will take me through the weekend. And I need them. My face hurts.

Hopefully, all the other wonderful ladies will be taking fantastic notes that they won’t mind sharing, because I am going to be slightly out of it on Saturday. The meds make me drowsy- I slept pretty much all day.

So if you’re attending Boot Camp in Baltimore, I’ll be the one with the puffy face who is drooling on her notes.

As for the actual procedure, it wasn’t fun. We never found the prescription for the anti-anxiety meds that I was supposed to take the night before and the morning of the appointment. They offered to give me the meds when I got there, but said they were mostly to help patients GET to the dentist, that they wouldn’t make a difference during the whole surgery. If I took them, I’d have to wait at their office for them to kick in before they even started the IV to start the procedure.

Since I’m not afraid of IVs, I opted to get right to it, so I could be done and go home. They started me on oxygen and nitrous, and then started the IV. I wasn’t totally out, so I could hear them and I could feel them doing stuff, but there was no pain. They put ear muffs on me so I couldn’t hear the instruments scraping and drilling and stuff. Also, they kept coating my lips with lip balm (which they gave me to take home) to help prevent chapping and stuff. I thought that was a nice touch.

While I was there, I felt like it was taking a long time. And I really desperately wanted to scratch my nose, it was itchy. But one arm had the blood pressure cuff and the other had the IV and they kept telling me not to move them. I don’t know how long it really did take- because as soon as we were done, I came home and went to bed. I woke up at like 6pm- my appointment was at 830am.

That was my exciting day. I hope yours involved less dentistry.

Misc. Stuff

This is just kind of a catch-all housekeeping post filled with stuff you may or may not find interested or informative. Like a junk drawer, things I’ve been meaning to mention and either forgot during a blog where it’d fit in, or something with not enough content to be it’s own post…

  • Christa at Little BGCG is having a baby event starting on the 15th to welcome her son, Mason, to the world. Check it out!
  • I am having the majority of my dental work done TOMORROW. I was supposed to go last Wednesday, but Ryan was in the hospital. I’m scared. AND we lost the prescription for the anti-freak out meds they gave us sometime between last week when we had it filled and today when I was looking for them. I’m supposed to take one tonight 12 hours before I go in, and two tomorrow an hour before the procedure. Who knows what happened, we had the loaner van for awhile during that time… could have left them there.
  • It’s been raining for two days, boo. I really wanted to get out of the house, since I now have a vehicle, but I hate dragging the kids out in the rain.
  • Ryan went for his weekly blood work on Tuesday, as usual. He’s still got an ear infection, so they put him on yet another antibiotic. His butt has not been happy about it, poor baby.
  • We leave FRIDAY for Baltimore for my conference! And I will be out of commission due to the sedation from my oral surgery tomorrow… so that leaves TONIGHT to figure out what I’m going to wear and pack. I think despite the rain, we might have to shop tonight when Aaron gets home.
  • Oh and if I attempt to blog tomorrow, please disregard anything I say since I’ll be under the influence LOL
  • I just earned ANOTHER $5 gift card from Amazon through Swagbucks. LOVE that site. If you haven’t joined, sign up! It’s free, and all you need to do is click the little banner below. I will love you long time since I also get referral points or something.

  • And one last thing (I think)… I am a sheeple and I’ve added a formspring ask me anything section to my sidebar. You can either use it there, in the sidebar, or you can click here for the direct page. Give me good stuff to blog about! Or even bad stuff. Please. I want to know what you want to know about me!

I’d rather give birth than go to the dentist.

Seriously. Just the thought of someone poking around in my mouth gives me heart palpitations and I break out into a sweat. I generally procrastinate about getting anything dental taken care of. For example, my last cleaning was in 2004. I was pregnant with Mia, in the first trimester.

My wisdom teeth started coming in back in 1997. Three came in crooked, and one was impacted. Know when I finally sucked it up and got them out? 2006. That is 9 years of ouchy teeth. I had them completely sedate me when I had them removed, and don’t remember a thing.

However, when I got home, I noticed that my molars on the top- all the way in the back, the ones previously next to wisdom teeth- had tiny little cavities in them. I could feel them with my tongue. I’d never had a cavity before, but since they didn’t hurt, I never did anything about it. I just kept tabs on them with my tongue, and over the years they’ve gotten bigger.

Last night while eating a cheeseburger, a chunk of one of those molars broke right off. I sat waiting for the excruciating pain, but it never came. I asked Aaron to call the local dentist that the girls go to and make me an appointment, so he did that this morning.

They were able to get me in this afternoon. I was so nervous. My hands were shaking, and I was nauseous. I don’t even know WHY I am afraid of the dentist! As I said, I’ve never had a cavity, so I’ve never dealt with drills or anything. I didn’t need braces growing up, and the only thing I’ve really ever had done were cleanings.

Anyway, bottom line is I need root canals in those two teeth, and the rest are fine. They actually called my teeth beautiful and said I take wonderful care of them… go figure. They also recommended that I get sedation. I really liked the dentist, he made me feel like he wouldn’t hurt me. BUT he doesn’t do root canals on the top two molars, so he’d refer me out. The only place he’d recommend is in Myrtle Beach. He said the local guy who does it here in town doesn’t do sedation and is kind of rough- a 20 year retired Marine dentist. My other option would be to let him extract those two teeth, since they will do that at the local office.

And as a side note, what is up with all the old timey pictures of people with toothaches that have the white bandages around their whole heads? I mean how the heck does that make your teeth feel any better?

Lazy Saturday Night Banter

I woke up today, and felt like baking. I thought about how I should bake something super cool and yummy and take pics and blog about it, so that I have more than the one recipe to share with you all. All the cool bloggers do it. But then, I decided I NEEDED more Black Bottom Cupcakes, so you get no new recipe today.

When it comes to food, I tend to be a creature of habit. I make the same few things over and over. In high school, my mom packed my lunch every day and it was always a ham and cheese sandwich. I guess I stick with what I like. I am such a picky eater that sometimes there aren’t many options that sound appetizing to me.

Today’s been a lazy day. We haven’t left the house, let alone dressed- we’re all still in our jammies. We should be doing laundry and packing for Philly- we have to leave soon. More chemo and lasers to the eyes. Good times. I hope it’s not too cold and I really hope it doesn’t snow!

The twins went in for their monthly RSV shot yesterday and Ryan is up to 17 pounds! He was stuck at 16 for the past couple months, so I’m happy. He’s been eating a lot more lately too- I think he might be about to hit a growth spurt. Dylan on the other hand, is always in a growth spurt- and he’s 20 pounds already. Lili didn’t hit 20 pounds until she was 18 months old- so he’s a big guy. And weren’t they JUST 3 and 4 pounds the other day?

We got a package in the mail from Gymboree. I’d used my Gymbucks for some pants for the boys for next winter & also got them these cool hats for this summer. Dylan is such a little punk- he always looks like he has a bad attitude. He cracks me up. He looks so old here, I can’t even stand it.

I think they might be getting more teeth- Dylan has been chewing on everything and drooling gallons again. Ryan keeps using his tongue to feel his teeth and making weird faces when he does it. He also likes to make this clicking noise by rubbing his fingernails on his teeth. He’ll be laying there and we hear ‘click click click click’.

Oh! My not so exciting day at home just may be getting more interesting- something has possessed Aaron to attempt to bathe the dog. She hasn’t been washed since she was a puppy, and we always did it outside. He’s putting her in the tub. Also, she hates water- won’t go in her pool, the ocean, hides when it rains… I may be back with a funny story and some pictures!
